New DJI Mic Mini - wireless mic solo for only 59 euros, as a set 169 euros

[15:20 Tue,26.November 2024   by Thomas Richter]

Many details were already leaked via www.slashcam.de/news/single/Neues-DJI-Mic-Mini-kommt-bald---Funkmikro-solo-fuer-18941.html, but now DJI&s new ultra-compact wireless microphone system, the Mic Mini, has been officially announced. The mini version of DJI&s wireless microphone system DJI Mic consists of two wireless microphones weighing only 10 grams and measuring 26 x 26 x 15 mm, a receiver, and a charging case.

The omnidirectional wireless microphone can operate for 11.5 hours without charging, with a full charge taking 90 minutes. For a quick boost, 5 minutes of charging provides enough power for 1 hour of operation. The microphone can connect to the receiver or pair via Bluetooth with a smartphone or DJI&s Osmo Action 5 Pro, Action 4, or Pocket 3 cameras, enabling standalone use for just 59 euros. For more options, the Mic Mini Bundle costs 89 euros and includes a dedicated receiver capable of receiving audio from distances up to 400 meters and forwarding it via cable to a camera. Thanks to a USB-C/Lightning adapter, the receiver can also be connected directly to an iPhone, Android smartphone, or PC.

For recording scenarios like interviews requiring two microphones, there’s a complete bundle available for 169 euros. It includes two mini mics, a receiver, and a charging case that provides power for 48 hours of operation. A fully charged case offers around 3.6 full charges for both transmitters and the receiver, enabling a total of 48 hours of mobile operation.

Special Features of the DJI Mic Mini

To avoid the notorious issue of audio clipping during loud sounds, the Mic Mini includes an automatic limiter that reduces volume when the signal becomes too high. If the signal is too low, it can be amplified in five levels using a dial on the receiver. Additionally, it features two levels of noise reduction tailored for different environments: one for quiet indoor spaces to reduce background noises like fans, air conditioning, and reverb, and another for noisy surroundings, with the goal of enhancing vocal clarity. The DJI Mic Mini supports both mono and stereo recordings. Audio recordings from the two transmitters can be output separately or combined into a single track.

Using the DJI Mimo App, users can activate a backup recording feature that saves two tracks for every DJI Mic Mini recording: a primary track with normal volume and a secondary track recorded 6 dB quieter to avoid issues like clipping or distortion. This ensures usable audio even with fluctuating volumes, such as during live performances.

Compatibility with Multiple Devices

The receiver is compatible with cameras, smartphones, computers, and tablets. When connected to a camera via the camera audio cable (3.5 mm TRS), it supports power sync with the camera. When connected to a smartphone, it enables external playback without needing to remove the cable and can also be charged via the smartphone.

Differences from the DJI Mic 2

How does the new Mini Mic differ from the DJI Mic 2 introduced in January (www.slashcam.de/news/single/DJI-Mic-2-vorgestellt---drahtloses-Mikrofonsystem--18361.html)? The most obvious difference is the size of the microphones/transmitters: the Mini Mic lives up to its name, being less than half the size and weighing only about a third of the original.

However, as the Mini Mic costs less than half the price of the Mic 2 (349 euros), some (professional) features have been omitted. For example, the Mic Mini lacks the local recording function with 32-bit float of the transmitters, and the receiver does not have a touchscreen. Nevertheless, the Mic Mini offers a unique selling point: the automatic recording volume limiter to avoid clipping.

DJI Mic Mini Price and Bundles

The Mic Mini system is available in several variants to suit different user needs. The DJI Mic Mini transmitter in black or white costs 59 euros individually and can be used as a Bluetooth microphone with a smartphone. The set with one transmitter and one receiver costs 89 euros, and with an adapter for iPhones (Lightning), it’s priced at 108 euros. The complete set, which includes two transmitters, one receiver, and a charging case, costs 169 euros, or 188 euros with the smartphone adapter.

The new Mini Mic faces competition from the recently introduced RØDE Wireless Micro, which also boasts a very compact form factor and is priced similarly (159 euros for a bundle with 2 microphones and a receiver), as well as from the new Sennheiser Profile Wireless System.
