Nikon has equipped its flagship camera, the Nikon Z9, with a host of improvements and new features via Firmware Update 5.30, some of which are entirely new and others adopted from other models in the Z series. Among the improvements is the autofocus performance, which now benefits from faster and more stable subject detection and tracking for fast action shots, thanks to deep learning technology. The automatic shooting function gains a new AF standby position and improved face detection, for example, for long-distance shots of sports and wildlife. ![]() Nikon Z9 Also new is the ability to create custom looks in Nikon&s desktop software The Z9 now receives the **Focus Limiter function** from the Nikon Z8 and Z6III, which allows limiting the focus area, as well as their advanced custom focus area control. From the Nikon ZF comes the **new Monochrome Picture Controls** in the form of the two picture profiles "Deep Tone Monochrome" and "Flat Monochrome." However, there are also some completely new functions for the Z9 that no other Z camera has had before. For instance, the **Cycle Subject Detection** function can be assigned to a function button, allowing easy switching between the different subject detection options (such as Human, Animal, Vehicle). Furthermore, **selective subject detection per AF area** now allows precise configuration of which AF modes should have subject detection active and which should not. In the new firmware, subject detection, which was previously disabled, is now selectable in Single-point AF and Dynamic-area AF modes.
