For its own SL camera, but of course also all other L-mount cameras, Leica introduces the new Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/24-70 ASPH zoom lens. It comes with a slightly shorter zoom range than the already available Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4/24-90 ASPH optics, is also slightly lighter (it weighs 856 g) and offers a continuous speed of F2.8.

The lens doesn&t have its own optical image stabilizer; most L-mount cameras bring built-in sensor stabilization to help out. The aperture consists of 11 blades and can only be adjusted electronically (a ring is missing).
The optical design of the Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/24-70 ASPH. consists of a total of 19 lenses in 15 groups. Three aspherical lenses are used to correct monochromatic aberrations and nine lenses made of glass with anomalous partial dispersion are used to correct chromatic aberrations. The minimum focusing distance is 18 centimeters for the shortest and 38 centimeters for the longest focal length from the image sensor.
