The optical design of the Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/24-70 ASPH. consists of a total of 19 lenses in 15 groups. Three aspherical lenses are used to correct monochromatic aberrations and nine lenses made of glass with anomalous partial dispersion are used to correct chromatic aberrations. The minimum focusing distance is 18 centimeters for the shortest and 38 centimeters for the longest focal length from the image sensor.
