The rumor mill considers the introduction of at least two more exciting cameras by the end of 2025 very likely, both of which are expected to feature 33MP sensors: the Sony A7 V and the Canon EOS R6 Mark III.
For the Canon EOS R6 Mark III, a 33 MP sensor would represent a clear leap from its predecessor, the EOS R6 Mark II, which still featured 24 MP. We expect the same or only slightly modified sensor from the Canon EOS C50 here, which we have already extensively tested in the
slashCam lab and classified as "solid."
Perhaps even more exciting will be the introduction of the Sony A7 V, which Sony is launching as a successor to its successful A7 IV.
As is well known, the A7 IV already features a 33 MP sensor. The rumor mill also attributes a 33 MP sensor to the upcoming Sony A7 V – it will be interesting to see if Sony has a faster-reading version up its sleeve. A partially stacked sensor design would be conceivable here, similar to what is used in the Panasonic S1II (24 MP Partially Stacked Sensor) or the Nikon Z6III / Nikon ZR (also a 24MP Partially Stacked Sensor).
According to Canonrumors (www.canonrumors.com/canon-eos-r6-mark-iii-rf-45mm-f-1-2-coming-november-6-specs/), the specs for the Canon EOS R6 Mark III are currently as follows:
- 34.2MP/32MP (Same as the Cinema EOS C50)
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with multiple subject detections
- IBIS: 6.5 Stops
- Pre-capture
- Max Framerate: 40fps E-Shutter
- Max ISO: 64000
- Open Gate
- Price: €2899

- Shipping late November (Tentative)
According to SonyAlpha Rumors (www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-a7v-likely-announcement-in-november-with-shipment-start-in-q1/), the specs for the Sony A7 V are currently as follows:
- 33MP sensor (we don’t know if it’s a tweaked A7IV sensor version or a new partially stacked)
- New AI chip like the Sony A1II
- Same Sony A7rV body design. This means the same 4-way fully articulating screen and the same controls
- It does NOT have the Sony A1II/A9III grip design
- Price close to
- Announcement likely in November at the earliest, with shipment starting in January/February
Similar to the Canon EOS R6 Mark III and the Canon EOS C50, one could already get a glimpse of the expected AF performance of the Sony A7 V in cameras like the Sony A1 II or the current Sony FX2.
We recently used the latter (www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/Slashcam-Interviewsetup-im-Test--Sony-FX2--iPhone-Pro-Max--Blackmagic-Cloud--Nanlite-PICO.html) very successfully for our interviews at IBC 2025 and discussed it here. The AF performance of the Sony FX2 is at a very high level, as our practical test of the Sony FX2 (www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/Sony-FX2-im-Praxistest--Erstmalig-neigbarer-Sucher--Cine-Gehaeuse-wie-FX3--33-MP-Fullframe-CMOS--alles-.html) also showed. Especially the "memory" of Sony&s AI-powered AF remains in a class of its own – as can also be seen here in our review video (timestamp set):
