The newly introduced Nikon Coolpix P1000 is quite compact, yet extremely tele-strong. The bridge camera offers 125x optical zoom, which corresponds to a focal length range of 24-3,000 mm converted to Kb. If you want to be prepared for spontaneous animal shots or the like without heavy equipment in your hiking gear, you will find an interesting alternative here. Despite integrated optical image stabilization, however, a kind of tripod should also be included in these telephoto focal lengths.
The built-in NIKKOR lens offers an average light intensity of 1:2.8-1:8, the 16-megapixel CMOS image sensor with 1/2.3" is not one of the largest, but is nevertheless back-exposed. The P1000 records videos in 4K/UHD at 30p or in Full-HD (1080p) at frame rates of up to 60p. A clean signal can be output via HDMI, there is also a microphone input, but there is no headphone output.
The 8.1 cm display (921,000 pixels), which can be opened to the side just like camcorders in the past, is easy to turn and fold. Alternatively, an OLED viewfinder with 2.36 MP resolution can be used for image control. The camera weighs 1415g including battery and memory card.
The COOLPIX P1000 will be available from mid-September 2018 for EUR 1,099.
