New Red EPIC-W with GEMINI 5K S35 Sensor - It´s an EPIC-Ws!!!

RED has introduced a new sensor called GEMINI 5K S35 for the RED EPIC-W camera. This sensor was already shown before two months ago as a special design for space shots and has now obviously also made it into the regular RED portfolio.

Just like the concept of a Sony Alpha 7s or a GH5s, the idea behind the GEMINI sensor is less, but bigger Sensel. But while the special production was specified with 18.5+ f-stops in January, the now available GEMINI 5K sensor has "only" 16.5+ f-stops on the data sheet. As much as the much denser 8K HELIUM colleague. The pixel pitch of the 8K-model is 3.6µm while the new Gemini reaches 6µm.

Like many Panasonic cameras, the sensor is equipped with a Dual Native ISO circuit, which enables two native sensitivity modes for the GEMINI 5K S35. A further advantage of the larger Sensel: In cropped 2K and 4K resolutions, the effective sensor area of the GEMINI 5K S35 is significantly larger than that of the high-resolution 8K HELIUM sensor.

The dimensions of the sensor are 30.72 mm x 18 mm, which is slightly wider than the HELIUM (29.9mm) and significantly wider than the DRAGON 5K (25.6mm) of the Scarlet-W.

The GEMINI 5K sensor sits in a DSMC2-EPIC-W housing and supports up to 96 fps in 5K, which requires data rates of up to 275 MB/sec. The GEMINI 5K Body also uses the current, extended image processing pipeline IPP2 in the camera and can simultaneously record REDCODE RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR.

The new RED EPIC-W with GEMINI 5K S35 sensor is now available for ,500. WEAPON Carbon Fiber and RED EPIC-W 8K customers have the possibility to upgrade to the GEMINI sensor at a later date.
