Samsung is always good for nice rumors. At the moment, the possibility that further developed NX1 sensors could be sold to other camera manufacturers is again being hotly discussed -- corresponding information comes from Korean forums. Specifically, it is about image sensors in APS-C size, as customers Fujifilm and Pentax are mentioned. There is also talk of a possible full-frame sensor.
This would not come out of the blue; at the beginning of the year rumours were already circulating that a kind of
NX2 prototype should be in circulation with a new sensor and image processor. A resurrection of the Samsung camera division already seemed quite unrealistic to us at that time, but instead it seemed more likely to us that such a prototype could be used for customer acquisition just in the field of image sensors. What the manufacturer offered in the -- then unfortunately discontinued -- NX1 was quite impressive.
Whether a CMOS from Samsung already works in the Fujifilm X-T3 is not known. In fact, the two companies are cooperating in the development of sensors, but ISOCELL Plus was initially concerned with improving the light sensitivity of sensors for smartphone camera modules. Rumor has it that Pentax will buy an image processor in addition to a Samsung sensor. This would certainly suddenly make their cameras more interesting for filmmakers, but hopes of a similar kind have been dashed time and again so far.
Maybe we´ll learn more at Photokina about whether these purchase agreements really exist.
