According to a report by Sonyalpharumors there are problems with the latest firmware update 2.0 for the Sony Alpha 7 III and Alpha 7R III (a7R III). Affected are users who use third party batteries. Some batteries can still be used, but from time to time a special warning pops up with the text "The operation and safety of the battery cannot be guaranteed. Continue use? (see picture of Tim O&Connor from the Ddpreview forum), and the current battery level is no longer displayed. Other batteries are no longer usable - the camera says that the batteries are not suitable and shuts down.
It is not yet clear which criteria the firmware uses to decide which batteries will continue to work and which ones are not or which battery models are affected at all. Problems of the first kind (warning plus continue function) have been reported with (some?) Wasabi, Baxxtar and Patona batteries. Owners of the Sony a7(R)III and external batteries should therefore do without the latest firmware for the time being if they want to continue using their batteries. ![]() Warning against external batteries For all other a7(R)III users: the firmware update 2.0 can be found here for the ![]() ![]() Under the general point "improvement of the performance and stability" hides the otherwise not mentioned innovation concerning the third party batteries.
