Sony announces to having developed an improved Exmor R sensor for the next generation compact cameras and consumer camcorders. The backside illumination CMOS IMX144CQJ is mainly thanks to larger pixels (1.85 m) to be both a bit stronger than light can also provide a higher dynamic range than previously. The sensor is of the type 1/1, 7 &(as compared to previously 1/2, 3 ") and effectively solves a Seitenverhaeltnis from 4:3 to approx 12.4 megapixels. In 17:9 mode, it provides the DCI-compliant 4K resolution 4096x2160 at up to 60 frames per second. With a resolution of 2000x750 pixels, it provides frame rates of 240fps. Nevertheless, the power consumption of the chip should be about one-third lower than current comparable components from Sony.
