The new Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II (SEL1635GM2) is 133 grams lighter than its predecessor with very similar specifications. Thanks to a so-called floating optical design, the lens also now comes in 10 mm shorter. The overall length is now only 112 mm and the weight is exactly 547 g. Even the lens hood has now been made as compact as reasonably possible, according to Sony.
The new design also means that the center of gravity doesn't change as much when zooming and focusing, which can be especially beneficial when working with a gimbal. In addition, focus breathing is said to have been minimized, which filmmakers in particular will also appreciate - because the image section (or focal length) no longer changes so much when focusing.

The new Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II (SEL1635GM2) is shorter and lighter.
In addition, Sony claims to have improved overall sharpness and close focus. The closest focusing distance has been raised from 0.28 to 0.22 meters, and even at the maximum aperture of f/2.8, good sharpness is now said to be achieved right to the edges.
The new lenses are also said to have faster apertures and autofocus motors that can also handle continuous shooting at 30 frames per second. The aperture ring's click modes can also be turned off, allowing for stepless aperture adjustments when shooting.
The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II is scheduled to begin shipping in October for 2.399 Euro.
