New Studio Displays and More: Apple Roadmap 2026 - iMac Pro with M5 Max and MacBooks with M6 Planned

[13:02 Thu,18.December 2025   by Thomas Richter]

We already got a rough glimpse into Apple&s roadmap for next year and the year after about a month ago thanks to Apple insider Mark Gurman www.slashcam.de/news/single/Apple-plant-OLED-MacBook-Pro--Mac-Studio-M6-Ultra--19647.html, and now further information has leaked. Perhaps the most surprising model announcement, however, comes from a very special source – an M5 Max chip iMac (which will be installed next year) is mentioned in a leaked internal Apple Kernel Debug Kit, which is said to be the iMac Pro already mentioned in other rumors.

Resurrection of the iMac Pro - with M5 Max?

This would revive the iMac Pro, which existed from 2017 to 2021—back then still featuring Intel Xeon-W CPUs instead of Apple Silicon—and which, in terms of performance, would fill the gap between the most powerful iMac (so far equipped only with an M4) and the Mac Studio (with M4 Max or M3 Ultra) (here is our Performance test of the Apple iMac Pro in 4K/5K with ARRI, RED, Canon, Panasonic, Blackmagic, and Sony from 2018.

Based on the Kernel Debug Kit and other sources, Macrumors has now reconstructed a rather detailed overview of the Apple roadmap for 2026/2027, nicely supplementing Mark Gurman&s previous leaks and confirming the rumor about a new low-cost MacBook model. Here is a brief overview of the models relevant to power users:

New iPads and MacBooks

New iPads and MacBooks are set to kick things off in spring 2026. Surprisingly, the **iPad 12** is expected to feature the A19 chip, while the new **iPad Air 11" and 14"** models will receive an upgrade to the M4 chip. In the laptop sector, Apple is planning a new, particularly affordable **Low-Cost MacBook**, which will be equipped with an A18 Pro chip for the first time, marking a departure from the previous clear separation of the two Apple Silicon series (A-series for mobile, M-series for computers). In parallel, the **MacBook Air** and **MacBook Pro** models are to be updated to the new M5 series (including M5 Pro and M5 Max).

The First Foldable iPhone
The **iPad mini 8** is expected in September 2026, which should integrate either the A19 Pro or even the A20 Pro. However, the main attraction will likely be Apple&s first foldable iPhone—about 7 years after the first foldable model on the mass market, the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The foldable iPhone will open like a book and is expected to be slightly wider than it is tall, resembling a small iPad when unfolded (with a screen diagonal of 7.7" - 5.3" when folded). Its launch might be postponed or specifications changed, as Apple is reportedly struggling with a high scrap rate due to the foldable display.

New iPhone 18 - but only Pro and Max versions at first

The side attraction in September will be the new **iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max** models, which for the first time will not be introduced together with the corresponding base model, as the only slightly upgraded iPhone 18 (including the iPhone 18e) will only hit the market in spring 2027. The most important innovation of the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) for smartphone filmmakers will likely be a camera module with a variable aperture. Furthermore, the Dynamic Island will be replaced by an under-display TrueDepth camera system for Face ID and a cutout in the upper left of the display housing the front camera. The new A20 at the heart of the new iPhone is expected to achieve further speed improvements through a special production method.

Mac Mini and Mac Studio - and MacBook Pros with M6

By the end of 2026, according to the information, Apple will complete the desktop lineup with the **Mac mini with M5 and M5 Pro**, the **Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra**, and a new **iMac Pro** that will use an M5 Max. Towards the end of 2026, the first **MacBook Pro models with the next Apple Silicon generation, the M6, M6 Pro, and M6 Max**, could also appear, some of which will be available with a **new OLED display**.

New Studio Displays and Goodbye Mac Pro

Sometime during 2026, there should finally be two new monitors (the last new release was the Apple Studio Display in 2022)—at least one of the new models (presumably named Studio Display 2) is expected to upgrade from the previously used IPS panel to Mini-LED technology, thus benefiting from the advantages of Mini-LED backlighting, such as better contrast and black levels, as well as true HDR representation. As already reported, the good old Mac Pro is likely a thing of the past and will not be released in a new version.

And the Prices?

Nothing is known about the prices of the new releases at this stage, but it is to be assumed that Apple will either be forced to increase prices due to the current massive memory crisis and the resulting price increases not only for memory modules but also for other components. However, Apple might not be as heavily affected because long-term supply contracts likely secure fixed prices—in this case, Apple might be tempted to simply increase its own profit through a market-opportune price hike.
