New firmware for Canon

[17:46 Tue,29.July 2025   by Thomas Richter]

Canon has released new firmware for two of its Cinema EOS cameras (C80 and C400) and several EOS R system cameras (including the R1, R5, R5 II, and R5 C). All updates have a new feature in common: the ability to protect the camera with a 6-digit PIN, which can be set when the camera is first restarted after the firmware update. The PIN entry is then required each time the camera is turned on, but can also be deactivated. This feature has also been added to the EOS R6 Mark II, EOS R7, EOS R8, EOS R10, EOS R50, and EOS R50 V.

The Canon EOS C400 and EOS C80 also receive support for the correction of distortion and chromatic aberration when playing Cinema RAW Light clips in the camera. In addition, CV protocols can be output to multiple devices for virtual productions. Lens metadata can then be used by multiple different computers running the Canon CV Metadata Extraction Plugin.

With the new firmware version, the edge display (display level 2) is also expanded on both cameras to display more information at a glance. This includes parameters for sensor mode and resolution, recording codec selected for each card slot, custom image gamma and color space, digital image stabilization status, and electronic level tilt angle.

The firmware update for the Canon EOS R1 and R5 II is almost a double one, because the version released shortly before had caused a serious new problem and had to be withdrawn. The problem (videos could not be recorded correctly when a memory card with more than 2 TB was used and the "Pre-Recording" setting was activated) has now been fixed in the very latest firmware.

This Firmware Version 1.1.2 fixes the following issues that occurred in version 1.1.0:
1. Fixes an issue where videos could not be recorded correctly when a memory card with more than 2 TB was used and the[Pre-recording] setting was enabled.
2. Fixes an issue where the camera did not function properly after updating to firmware version 1.1.0 when the photo shooting/video recording switching function was set to[Silent Shutter Function Switching] or[Disable].

This firmware also includes the following changes introduced in firmware version 1.1.0:
1. Improved security features. A password must first be set.
- Adds the ability to review the history of changes to passwords, network information, or other settings.
2. Allows firmware updates to be performed when the camera is connected to the Internet and new firmware is made available on Canon servers.
3. Adds[Viewfinder Priority] mode, which activates the viewfinder when a user is detected by the rear sensor.
4. Provides the ability to automatically detect flicker at 100 or 120 Hz during live view display.
5. Adds the ability to register the focus position as a preset in the CR-A100 Camera Remote Application. This capability makes it easier to focus on objects at the desired distance when the application is used with the Robotic Camera System CR-S700R.
6. Adds the ability to select[Panning Assist]. When users pan with compatible lenses, image stabilization and corrections for blurred subjects during exposure are applied.
7. Provides the ability to select[Case Special] to extend servo AF characteristics, which is effective for subjects behind a net at sporting events such as badminton or volleyball.
8. Adds support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI).
9. Adds a function that simultaneously protects images when they are rated.
10. Adds the ability to use up to 8 TB CFexpress cards.
Note
– Cards larger than 8 TB require low-level formatting by the camera.
– Cards larger than 8 TB are treated as 8 TB cards.
– Cards larger than 2 TB cannot be used to update the firmware.
11. Provides a lower image capture rate to avoid overheating during extended remote shooting when connected to the CR-A100.
12. When transferring images with voice memos via FTP, the priority of the transfer order has now changed, with the voice memo file (WAV) being sent first and then the image file.
If a voice memo is added to an image in the queue for transfer, the image and voice memo are now sent last.
13. Adds the ability to set the number of shots taken in continuous shooting mode.
14. Adds the ability to set[Airplane mode] to the customization of the recording button.
15. Adds the ability to enable[Exposure Simulation] when a flash unit is connected.
16. Improved AF tracking during video recording for subjects that are difficult to focus on.
