Sony has announced two firmware updates for its A1 and A7S III full-frame DSLM cameras, including improved shooting modes.
At first glance, firmware version 1.3 for the mirrorless full-frame A1 camera actually gets a pretty radical improvement. For example, 8K 4:2:2 10-bit video recording is now possible for the first time. Until now, the A1 only recorded its 8K videos with a maximum of up to 10 bits 4:2:0. The latest firmware thus increases color resolution on paper by storing more chroma channel information.
But since the sensor "only" has an 8K in Bayerpattern, this additional color information would be computationally superfluous in a 1:1 readout, since a Bayerpattern in a native readout can already store its information completely in a 4:2:0 signal - there are only 2 x green, 1 x red and 1 x blue as measured values for each of 4 sensors.
However, the Alpha1 8K records in an 8K UHD format (7,680 x 4,320 pixels), which is downsampled from an 8.6K sensor. So it's not a 1:1 readout, and the additional color information created during downsampling could thus benefit slightly from an expanded chroma recording. In any case, the new format hereby offers more recording latitude - and thus perhaps an argument against RAW, which Canon makes available to filmmakers in this price range.
It should also be noted that in a direct visual comparison between 8K RAW and 8K 4:2:2 10-bit recording, the compression artifacts play a far more weighty role than the color format.
Unfortunately, not for moving images, Sony brings a lossless compressed Raw recording for photos into play for this purpose. It offers small, medium or large (S, M or L) file sizes. The 'L' file is equivalent to the camera's existing Lossless Raw option, which retains full image quality in a smaller file size, with the smaller alternatives reducing the number of pixels in the files.
The new firmware version 2.1 for the A7S III adds the ability to take proxy shots while the camera is controlled remotely via a computer. The update is also said to improve eye AF performance.
