New specification 9.1 for microSD Express cards - up to 600 MB/s

[17:14 Mon,23.October 2023   by Rudi Schmidts]

The SD Association (SDA) has announced a new specification (9.1) for microSD Express cards that not only doubles the potential speed another time, but also defines four new SD Express Speed classes to guarantee minimum performance - including access to multiple streams and the associated thermal requirements.

The latest generation of microSD Express uses the PCI Express interface and now offers a maximum speed of 1,969 megabytes per second (MB/s), i.e. almost 2 gigabytes per second (GB/s) - a single PCIe Gen4 lane is then used for this purpose.

Since a lot of heat can be generated in a very small space, SD Express memory cards using NVMe specifications should now offer multiple power management settings through so-called Maximum Power (MP) values. Here, the card can only consume as much power as defined by a set MP value. These MP values can be determined by the host device to control the temperatures of an inserted card.

Thus, depending on the target class and selected PCIe bus mode, the host device can set appropriate thermal management parameters for the card, similar to an MP value for power management.

The SD 9.1 specification also defines the access rules required to guarantee the defined minimum performance of the PCI/NVMe interface in SD Express cards, including multistream access to up to eight parallel streams.

In order to guarantee users minimum performance, there are also four new classes (with new symbolism) which should guarantee the following minimum access times (E150, E300, E450 and E600):

So, as you can see, there could theoretically be microSD Express cards in the near future that should offer up to 600MB/s continuous write performance - which is often sufficient even for demanding compressed RAW video formats. Of course, we won&t see pricing and availability until manufacturers bring actual cards to market.

An easy-to-understand overview of the new specification available as PDF here.
