Newly selected: The 100 best films in the world - with new number 1 surprise

There are many lists of best films, but the list of the 100 best films of all time of the English film magazine Sight & Sound, which is published by the BFI (British Film Institute) and was just published on Thursday for the eighth time, has a special significance. What makes the Sight & Sound list so special is the number of contributors: this year 1,639 film critics, programmers, curators, archivists and academics took part - more than ever before. All submitted their personal Top Ten lists of films from which the big Top 100 was then calculated.

The big question when the big list is re-released is of course which films have been added and which have fallen out and which one(s) are at the top. And there are indeed some changes and also a new frontrunner, the new number 1 - for the first time by a female director - is the rather unknown avant-garde film

Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles by Chantal Akerman (1975), over 3 hours long. Before that, Orson Welles& Citizen Kane (1941) topped the list for 40 years (from 1962 to 2002) and was then replaced by Alfred Hitchcock&s Vertigo (1958) in 2012.

In terms of content, the film depicts the breakdown of a middle-class Belgian housewife, mother, and part-time prostitute over the course of three days; formally, it chronicles her domestic routine in extended time and from a fixed camera position. The BFI itself speculates in a

article on the reasons for the rise of the new leader and its similarity to the other films that already have the number 1.

The list always reflects current trends in film criticism as well as the (subjective) quality of the films, and of course the focus of the films considered changes with the age of the participants. Films of past decades move further and further away, new ones are added. Which critic has already seen all of the films in question and can select his 10 best against this background? Moreover, the concept of the 100 best films is becoming more and more restrictive in view of the hundreds of films that are constantly being added to the list every decade. Because new films must always be added, but the Top 100 is limited, each new round of voting must also constantly drop important films from the list. So this time out of the list are The Godfather Part II, Raging Bull, Touch of Evil, Le Enfants du paradis, La Grande Illusion, Chinatown, Lawrence of Arabia, The Colour Of Pomegranates, Aguirre and Intolerance, among others.

For film lovers or even people who work with and in film, perhaps the following list is even more important. Because in addition to the great list of the 100 best films of the critics,there is also the best 100 films as selected by the best directors in the world. This list has existed only since 1992 and complements the big list - had it started in 1992 with 101 directors it became each time more participants - in 2012 there were already 358 and this year there are 480 - the range includes renowned experimental, arthouse, mainstream and genre filmmakers from all over the world.

Here then, are the top 100 films of all time, as chosen by many of the greatest filmmakers alive today. Here, the critics& new #1 is "only" at #4, with #1 being Stanley Kubrick&s classic "2001 - A Space Odyssey" (#6 on the critics& list), followed by "Citizen Kane" and "The Godfather."
