What democratization of the means of production really means the digital revolution is beautifully demonstrated by an SF film production of some Nigerian teenagers who have produced a veritable science fiction short film by the simplest means.
With a smartphone with a broken screen as camera, improvised equipment (the tripod is a broken microphone stand, for example), some green fabric as green screen, open source 3D tools like Blender, the film team produced some pretty professional looking special effects for their 10 minute short "Z: The Beginning" - despite bad internet and regular power failures.
The autodidacts learned their VFX skills via YouTube, here the YouTube channel of
Critics Company, as they call themselves. After a crowdfunding campaign in their favour, which raised almost 6,000 dollars for better equipment, the young team now hopes to find an SF niche in Nigeria aka Nollywood, at least in terms of the number of films produced after the second largest film nation in the world, through even higher quality productions.
