Video clip: Canon RF Cine fixed focal length explained

Nikon Z f retro-look full-frame DSLM (FM2) unveiled for 2,499 Euro: 24MP sensor, 4K 10-bit 60p ...

After Nikon had already introduced an APS-C camera in retro look with the Z fc, the full-frame version now follows with a 24.5 MP CMOS sensor and a whole series of functions that originate from the Nikon Z8. First and foremost the Expeed 7 CPU, which is currently only found in the Nikon Z8 and Nikon Z9.

With the new Z f brings, Nikon takes its design cue from the "legendary" Nikon FM2, which is also pretty high up in our ranking of iconic cameras. The FM2 was built for 18 years - a long production time hardly imaginable today ...

The retro design (which is quite successful in our eyes) includes not only the classic leather look and the angular viewfinder, but above all the dials on the top of the camera, with which ISO and shutter speed can be set with an analogue feel.

The fact that the requirements for modern camera operation have evolved can be seen in the thumb and forefinger dials that are still available and thus optionally allow modern operation.

The monitor, which for the first time on a Nikon Z is both tiltable and rotatable, is also part of the modern operation and especially video-safe use.

This means that the "retro" Nikon Z f is probably more modern in terms of video ergonomics than, for example, a Nikon Z6II. If you need external monitoring despite the fold-out monitor, you will have to make do with a micro-HDMI port on the new Z f (we recommend using a cable clamp).

The Nikon Z f records to SD and microSD cards. Both card slots can be used with different backup and realy functions. When it comes to video formats, the Nikon Z f offers a maximum of N-Log 4K 10 bit 30p with full sensor readout and N-Log 4K 10 bit 60p in S35 crop.

A novelty for Nikon that is especially aimed at video users of the Nikon Z f is the support of aperture priority in video recording. Here, the user sets the exposure time and the camera regulates the aperture accordingly.

Newly implemented in the Nikon Z f is a scene recognition function that also works with manual focusing. Here, for example, an eye is recognised in manual focus mode and can be enlarged directly in the viewfinder for manual focusing via the magnification button. This is a function that we are currently familiar with (and appreciate), especially with Canon.
Whether this function is also possible in video mode of the Nikon Z f, however, remains to be clarified ...

The Nikon Z f is expected to be available in stores in October 2023.
