The Nikon Z8 is slated to receive a firmware update soon, bringing several new features to both photo and video modes. Several improvements concern focusing, both with autofocus and manually.

A focus limiter is new, allowing you to set the minimum and maximum focus distance for a subject. By setting a near and far point, you can prevent the camera from focusing on unwanted objects in the foreground or background.
More focus area patterns are being added for custom wide-area AF settings, and photographers and videographers gain better control over the subject detection area in MF and AF shooting. A new 400% live view magnification option is added to the custom settings menu[Zoom on/off].
The tonal values for N-Log View Assist are updated and should now better match the RED Technical LUT. New metadata fields also enable better integration with Final Cut Pro.
To reduce flicker due to high-frequency LEDs, frequency and shutter speeds can be set via new preset options.
Flexible Color Picture Controls are supported by allowing color profiles to be created in NX Studio and then imported into the Z8 as custom Picture Controls via memory card.
In-camera image playback includes new custom settings and display options, allowing image files to be filtered by date or rotated, among other things.
In the photo area, pixel-shift photography is being expanded; it can now be combined with focus-shift or AE bracketing without the need for external accessories. File management for pixel-shift shots should also be easier thanks to new folder options. White balance can be locked for the first shot when[Auto] or[Natural Light Auto] is selected.
