With firmware version 2.0, Nikon has released its first major firmware upgrade for the Z8, which is still free of charge. Most of the new functions relate to the photo area and many of the added functions are already familiar from the Z9.
There is now a special AF motif detection option for birds, or an auto-capture function that can trigger automatic shots if the subject fulfils one or more pre-configured criteria. The three criteria are a[Motion] option that recognises subjects moving in a certain direction, a[Distance] option that starts shooting when a subject is within a certain distance range, and a[Subject Detection] option that recognises people, animals, vehicles or aircraft within the frame. Interestingly, the auto-capture function can also be used for videos. ![]() A new option[Prioritise focus point (face priority)] has also been added to centre the display on a face if one is detected when scrolling through photos during playback. A new operating function makes it possible to end the zoom with a half press of the shutter button when the focus mode is set to manual focus. There are also new options for shutter noise and volume. Furthermore, the width of the focus area borders can now be selected and users can now optionally specify that the information on the shooting orientation should not be recorded in the EXIF data of the image. The user interface has been further optimised in its user-friendliness and now offers a differently organised layout of various functions used in tethered shooting. Users can now freely customise the layout of the live view and the control displays.
