For more than 70 years Nikon has produced its cameras in Japan, now the entire camera production will be moved to Thailand. The main reason is the targeted reduction of production costs. Production is moving step by step: the full-frame mirrorless cameras Nikon Z6 and Z7 are already being manufactured in Thailand, with the Nikon DSLR D6 to follow by the end of 2021.
Previously, Nikon's cameras were produced at the "Sendai Nikon" plant in Miyagi Prefecture, completed in 1971, and before that at other plants in Japan for over 70 years. While the plant will no longer produce cameras in the future, it will remain in operation to produce individual parts for Nikon's video products, which require high precision in production.
