As we already announced, Sony today unveiled a new Xperia flagship smartphone that packs a full-blown 1-inch sensor into its body. The sensor is supposed to be the same Exmor RS model that is also installed in the RX100 VII. This means a 5K model (5472x3080) with a sensor size of 2.41µm.
Nevertheless, the Xperia PRO-I remains decidedly slim: it measures 166mm in length, 72mm in width, and is only 8.9mm "thick". The device is waterproof and dustproof according to IP65/68 and uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus - allegedly currently the toughest Gorilla Glass. The 10-bit-equivalent (??) 4K HDR OLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate should be more than good for video recording.
The battery holds 4,500 mAh and the included 30-watt XZQ-UC1 charger allows the smartphone to be charged up to 50% in just 30 minutes via the fast charging feature.
The Xperia PRO-I is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 and is thus also 5G-capable. The internal memory is 12 GB RAM plus 512 GB flash. It is interesting that you can also insert micro-SDXC media up to 1 TB. Especially for video recordings, this is a real additional benefit compared to the competition.
At the moment, the Xperia PRO-I is the first smartphone with 4K120p recording. The sensor itself is not articulating, but Sony talks about an integrated optical SteadyShot image stabilization called FlawlessEye. Some of the typical Alpha AF features incl. object tracking and eye tracking are also said to be found in the smartphone.
The integrated app "Videography Pro" allows quick access to creative settings for video recording and vlogging. Settings like focus, exposure or white balance can even be adjusted manually during recording. A separate shutter button can be used to directly start recording. Alternatively, other applications or functions can be assigned to this "shortcut" button.
Sony has also integrated eight different color profiles under Cinematography Pro, which are said to be inspired by the VENICE, among others.
Users can upgrade their mobile vlogging kit with the new Vlog Monitor, which is available as an accessory for the Xperia PRO-I. The monitor has a 3.5" LCD display with a 16:9 aspect ratio (1280x720) and a metal holder. The magnetic, detachable design makes it easy to attach and detach the display from the holder.
When recording with the Xperia PRO-I and the vlog monitor, users can use a Bluetooth hand grip such as the GP-VPT2BT to start and stop recording without having to press buttons on the Xperia PRO-I itself.
The vlog monitor also has a 3-pin 3.5mm microphone jack that allows users to connect their own external microphone. For this, the microphone can simply be attached to the accessory shoe mount.
The new Xperia PRO-I should be available from December 2021 for 1,799 euros. The vlog monitor and the grip should then also be available for 199 euros each.
