When Nvidia replaced the RTX 2080 with the RTX 3080 two years ago, it was hardly available for a long time after its presentation. The reason for the high demand was, among other things, a huge performance difference compared to the predecessor model, coupled with a rather attractive price of around 700 euros.
![]() The Nvidia RTX 4080 is currently (too?) well available. Perhaps potential buyers are simply waiting, however, because the new AMD graphics cards, which are placed as direct competitors to the RTX 4080, should also be on the shelves in less than two weeks. On paper, these offer the far better specifications: The Radeon RX 7900 XTX has a 384-bit wide memory connection with 24GB GDDR6, resulting in a transfer rate of 960 GB/s. The XT version, on the other hand, binds 20GB over 320 bits at 800 GB/s. The RTX 4080 only has 16GB to offer at 736GB/s, which is even less than the RTX 3080&s 760GB/s. In contrast to Nvidia&s latest generation - which remains at DisplayPort 1.4 - the new AMD GPUs have DisplayPort 2.1 connections. This allows resolutions of up to 8K165p or 4K480p to be output. The output is also possible with up to 12 bits per colour channel. As with Nvidia&s new generation, the hardware codecs of the Media Engine are dual. For example, an AVC and an HEVC codec can work in parallel, which will soon be supported by Adobe&s Premiere. De- and encoding can also be used in parallel for transcoding tasks. It is still unclear whether AMD&s new generation decoders can handle 10-bit 4:2:2 formats, which are becoming increasingly important in video editing. So far, only Intel and Apple can do this, while Nvidia and AMD are asleep here. ![]() The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is to be available from 13 December AMD&s prices will put additional pressure on Nvidia&s RTX 4080: With 43 TFLOPS and the faster memory interface for without taxes, the RX 7900 XT should already land at least on the level of an RTX 4080 with 16GB, which offers 49 TFlops, in terms of video editing performance. For just more, the even more potent RX 7900 XTX will launch with almost 57 TFLOPS and is very likely even closer to an RTX 4090. The AMD cards should be available from 13 December. The prices in euros are not yet known, but should end up around 1,200 and 1,300 euros due to the strong dollar and additional VAT. Since the entire PC market is currently in an acute phase of weakness, which even the pre-Christmas business does not seem to alleviate, it is highly likely that we will see a price war between AMD and Nvidia at the beginning of next year and even lower prices. After the recent crypto hot streak, it&s fair to say that users kind of deserve this coming price drop. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Nvidia RTX 4080/90 Preissenkung, Konkurrent AMD RX 7900 XT(X) startet in Kürze |
