63 mirrors. 29 robot arms. 3 directors. 1 plan sequence - the band OK Go is not known for bland, unimaginative, run-of-the-mill videos, but with their clip for the latest song Love, they should set a record even by their own standards. High-end technologies are used here for real, analog effects, which is a wonderful contrast to the artificial AI look of the day.
With the project, they explore one of the interfaces between technology and art, which was also an enormous logistical challenge. After a lengthy trial phase and detailed pre-visualization in 3D, the set was built for several weeks in a Budapest train station. To capture the kaleidoscopic images chronologically in a tracking shot, while people and machines implement a complex choreography with exact timing, 39 takes were necessary - the course for the four and a half minutes is about 75 meters long. The camera is also repositioned several times, from dolly to handheld to jib, etc.
While the music video itself already gives clear indications of how the visual effects are created, in the following, longer behind-the-scenes video, you can practically experience live how the video is made.
This is quite exciting, and when at the end the music video runs in split screen with parallel recorded BTS views and practically all the tricks are revealed, you can hardly help but smile admiringly again and again. And by the time the 20 minutes of BTS are over, the song has really stuck in your head - mission accomplished in two ways.
