The OM- 5 is the first camera from Olympus' successor company OM System. As the unofficial successor to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III, it also inherits many features from the former top model E-M1 Mark III.
The new model is particularly compact (approx. 12.5 x 8.5 x 5 cm) and weighs less than half a kilo - exactly 414 g "loaded". The OM-5 has an IP specification in dust and splash water protection according to IP53. The housing is made of plastic, which sits on a light alloy magnesium frame.

Technically, the OM-5 inherits many details from the OM-D E-M1 Mark III, although the autofocus algorithms and image stabiliser are said to have been further improved. The 20 MP MFT sensor has 121 integrated phase AF cross sensors. The sensor-shift image stabiliser is said to be able to compensate up to 7.5 stops with a compatible optically stabilised lens.

But for slashCAM readers, of course, the ultimate Gretchen question is always, "How are you doing with film?" And here OM-System has not given the OM-5 too much to go on by current standards.
At least the camera is capable of special C4K recording with 4,096 x 2,160 pixels in 24p (IPB / approx. 237 Mbit/s). But even in 4K-UHD, the OM-5 ultimately does not go beyond 30p. There is also a 120 fps HD recording and a special log colour profile for filmmakers (OM-Log400). Officially, the sensor is read out with a maximum of 12 bits.

The recommended retail prices are 1,299 euros for the OM-5 body and 1,699 euros for the kit including the 12-45mm F 4.0 Pro lens. Filmmakers should be able to get more for their money elsewhere. Panasonic GH5 models, for example, are also currently in this price range.
The OM-5 will be available from the end of November 2022.
