With the Blackmagic Camera 9.5 Update, which will soon be available as a public beta, AI-based autofocus functions will be introduced to Blackmagic cameras for the first time. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K will be the first to receive the update. A prerequisite for the new AF functions appears to be the best possible access to the corresponding lens protocol, which is why cameras with L-Mount are likely to be the first in line – after all, Blackmagic has been a member of the L-Mount Alliance since the end of 2023. The Pyxis is likely to be the next camera on the list of Blackmagic developers. ![]()
Looking at the new autofocus touch controls, there are touch buttons for AF-S and AF-C (continuous autofocus) on the one hand, and symbols for object recognition and face detection on the other. ![]() We suspect that Blackmagic is relying purely on AI-based autofocus in this first version of its autofocus implementation, which would be quite unique. This would mean that additional phase detection information, as used in current DSLMs via phase detection points, will not be available for the time being. ![]() We are very curious to see how well this AI-only autofocus will work. On the one hand, Blackmagic Design has a lot of tracking know-how through object recognition in Resolve – on the other hand, modern DSLMs use both AI and phase detection for their focusing systems. ![]() But even if this first version of the Blackmagic AF should not yet be able to compete with modern DSLM-AF systems – Blackmagic Design has definitely laid the foundation for a high-performance autofocus system here. We are sure that we will be hearing a lot more about this in the near future … ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Objekt- und Gesichtstracking Autofokus für Blackmagic Kameras via Firmware Update |
