With Odyssey, another player enters the stage of generative video AIs. Odyssey is specifically aimed at filmmakers who want to use AI to realize their vision. The goal is to address the biggest shortcoming of current video AIs: the lack of control over the video generation process.
![]() All objects in a scene can be individually defined and manipulated via prompts (or sketches or images). Another important feature for professional work is integrated version control for iterative working. Compatibility with existing production workflows, including export to standardized 3D file formats like USD, is ensured. Their approach is more reminiscent of 3D programs than current AIs: the creation of a detailed artificial world forms the background for the actual action of the film. Further improvements over current video AIs are expected in consistency and scene length - both necessary to achieve the targeted Hollywood level. The founders of Odyssey come from the field of self-driving cars and aim to transfer concepts from there to their visual AI. Unlike previous text-to-video AIs, Odyssey will not use random videos from the internet as training material. Instead, Odyssey plans to generate its own three-dimensional datasets from the real world to train its models. ![]() More Wish Than Reality However, the description of Odyssey&s capabilities on the website still resembles more of a wishful thinking than reality ("We are still at the beginning of this journey"). Odyssey has just come out of stealth mode after about a year with its project and has received initial funding of million from Google Ventures, the venture arm of Alphabet. With the money, Odyssey plans to increase its current staff of 13 full-time employees and build larger AI models. Even though Odyssey, in its described form, does not yet exist, it is clear that the addressed shortcomings are exactly those that need to be resolved for video AIs to become a true tool for professional filmmaking: they must enable intervention at all levels so that the produced clips can be precisely edited. Only then - with full control and not, as currently, a sequence of hacks with various tools for one purpose or another - will true AI films be possible, telling real stories and not just a series of short scenes with some camera movement. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Odyssey: Neue Video-KI speziell für Hollywood geplant |
