Open Gate and More: New Firmware for Canon EOS C400, C80, C70, and R5C is Here

[10:02 Sat,20.December 2025   by Thomas Richter]

Canon has now released the firmware updates for several models in its professional Cinema EOS series, which were announced in September. The C400, C80, C70, and R5 C will receive features that are already integrated into the recently introduced new Canon C50. The biggest new feature is likely the 3:2 Open Gate recording for the EOS C400, but the updates also bring several other practical functions such as an extended HDMI View Assist mode, quality improvement for Focus Peaking, display of Look-File descriptions, support for Cine-Servo lenses, an improved peripheral illumination correction, and optimized assignable buttons and joystick operation for the EOS C80 and EOS C400.

Open Gate and More for Canon EOS C400

Canon equipped the new EOS C50 as the first Cinema EOS camera with Open Gate recording, and now the EOS flagship C400 also gets this recording option through the update. The new **Full Frame 3:2 Open Gate sensor mode** utilizes the entire surface of the sensor and the entire image circle of full-frame lenses for a maximum resolution of 6,000 x 4,000. Recording can be done in RAW at 29.97p / 23.98p / 25.00p / 24.00p onto a CFexpress card.

Further New Features for the C400, C80, C70, and R5 C

All four models will benefit from an **improved Focus Peaking display**, which prevents the entire display from being overlaid at higher ISO values. Also new is **support for new Cine-Servo lenses** and the ability to display the **description of Look-Files** in the Custom Picture / Custom Image Settings (instead of just the file name).
