We just reported on the new free Affinity Suite (www.slashcam.de/news/single/Affinity-Photo--Designer-und-Publisher-ab-sofort-i-19622.html), which combines powerful image editing, a vector graphics editor, and even a complete publishing environment under one roof. In the process, we stumbled almost by chance upon an extraordinary open-source project called Graphite, which leaves us almost speechless. Fortunately, not entirely, so we will try to describe it:
;) Graphite - Free Open-Source Graphics Editor Graphite started as a simple vector editor and is currently developing into a universal all-in-one graphics tool. All tools in the editor are built around a node-based core, which can serve various application scenarios with its interface. These scenarios can be classic vector graphics tasks such as design or layout—similar to Illustrator or InDesign. However, raster functions are also set to be added by the end of this year, allowing Graphite to handle typical Photoshop tasks as well. This would make the program a living open-source alternative to the current Affinity Suite. However, it is based on a procedural basis where one can intervene at any point in the node tree. ;) Graphite is based on a node engine But that&s not all. Because of the node structure, the step to animation is not far—which is why motion design and VFX compositing are also on the project&s roadmap. Thus, a potential replacement for Apple&s Motion or Adobe&s After Effects. And all of this in one program under one interface! By the way, the GPU is allowed to help accelerate all effects under the hood, which makes the program feel enormously fluid. And because all of this still doesn&t sound completely incredible, it all runs in the browser! But not only that—in the future, Graphite will also be available as an app for all common operating systems. "On top" of that, the developers promise that the program will always be available for free as open source. We are excited to see where this project will develop.
