Sony presents the revised version of its standard G-Master FE 24-70 millimeter F2.8 zoom lens, designed specifically for Sony's Alpha System compact E-mount cameras and said to be the world's smallest and lightest 24-70 millimeter F2.8 zoom lens in its class. Weight has been reduced by approximately 20% compared to the first generation and is now 695 grams. The center of gravity has been moved to the rear of the new FE 24-70 millimeter F2.8 GM II for more comfortable handling.
Sony FE 24-70 Millimeter F2.8 GM II
The FE 24-70 millimeter F2.8 GM II features a completely redesigned optical construction that includes five aspherical elements, including two high-precision XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements. In addition, the optics feature two elements of ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and two Super ED glass elements. Combined with a new floating focus mechanism, the lens is said to be able to effectively compensate for chromatic aberrations, aberrations, coma and distortions. Sony's original AR Nano Coating II is said to effectively suppress flare and ghosting effects.
The aperture has also been renewed, consisting of eleven blades for a nearly circular bokeh. In terms of light intensity, a constant maximum aperture of F2.8 is given. The minimum focusing distance is 0.21 meters with a 24 millimeter focal length or 0.3 meters with a 70 millimeter focal length.
AF operation is said to be extremely quiet thanks to XD linear motors (there are four installed). Focus Breathing, Focus Shift and Axis Shift are said to be minimal when zooming. Focus Breathing compensation features offered by compatible Alpha series cameras are also supported. According to Sony, the lens' AF tracking performance when zooming should be about twice as good as its predecessor.
Manual focus, in turn, responds linearly, and the aperture appears to be de-clicked (stepless control). The lens offers a zoom ring torque adjustment switch (high or low), a newly added aperture ring with ON/OFF click switch, and an aperture lock. Features also include two adjustable focus hold buttons and a new lens hood with opening for circular polarizing filters (Ø 82 millimeters).
The largely weather-sealed Sony FE 24-70 millimeter F2.8 GM II for mirrorless (full-frame) cameras with E-mount will cost 2,399 euros and will be available in May.
