The Latvian animated film "Flow," produced with the open-source 3D modeling software Blender, just won the
The 81-minute indie animation, which features no dialogue, had already won over 60 awards, including Best Animated Picture at The Golden Globes. Flow beat out major competitors such as Pixar&s "Inside Out 2," DreamWorks& "The Wild Robot," and Aardman&s "Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl," with budgets that far exceeded Flow&s relatively modest .6 million: Production of Flow, which was entirely done in Blender, took 5 years. Blender&s integrated real-time render engine (EEVEE) allowed for constant live previews. The final rendering was also done on a PC and not a render farm, as is typical for professional animation films. There was no compositing; all colors were optimized and adjusted with shaders. Blender was supported by numerous plug-ins; a custom add-on was even developed for the simulation of water effects in Blender. Following the win of the film industry&s most prestigious award, it can be assumed that Blender will be considered more often for the production of animated films in the future. We will likely see more Blender productions on the big screen. ![]() Meanwhile, Flow has already recouped X times its production costs with approximately million in revenue; after the Oscar win, this number will likely increase significantly. Flow tells the story of a dark gray cat that awakens in a waterlogged universe where all human life seems to have disappeared and then embarks on a mystical journey with some animal companions.
