Over 26,500 artists sign statement against unregulated AI training

More than 19,000 artists and creatives, including celebrities like Bjorn Ulvaeus (ABBA), Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, and Thom Yorke (Radiohead), have signed a declaration opposing the unlicensed use of creative works for training AI models. They argue that this poses an unfair threat to the livelihoods of creators:

"The unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI endangers the livelihood of artists and must not be allowed."

The declaration is also supported by major record labels Universal, Sony, and Warner, as well as numerous music organizations from the US and Europe. Their concern: without royalties for the use of their works, artists& incomes could dry up, while AI-driven companies profit from their labor.

Notably absent are signatures from the film industry, suggesting that directors and producers do not (yet) feel as affected as musicians, writers, or actors.

The artists& battle against the unregulated use of their works by AI is also reflected in ongoing lawsuits against AI companies. In California, initial protective laws have already been passed, requiring transparency in AI training data and aiming to protect artists& rights. Whether the current statement from artists will lead to more comprehensive legislation remains to be seen.
