Panasonic GH5s - with powerful, immovable Multi-Aspect Ratio Sensor

Since a few days quite accurate specifications have been circulating on the net and now the confirmation for the CES 2018 is there. From February onwards, a special GH5s version of the Panasonic GH5 will be available, which will differ from the previous GH5 model with a new, bright sensor. The GH5 remains in the product range, especially since the new GH5s are not quite as universal as their little sister.

The "biggest" change is the sensor, which is now a multi aspect-ratio sensor compared to normal MFT sensors and is oversized, in order to be able to use the image circle into the image corners even with wide screen formats. It achieves its native 1:1 resolution in the 17:9 C4K format with 4096 x 2160 sensors. Without oversampling, the individual sensor sites have now become almost twice as large as the GH5, resulting in a dynamic gain of around 1.5 f-stop stages together with the dual-native ISO circuits. For this purpose, the sensor could no longer be mounted in a movable position, but is now once again firmly fixed in the classic way.

The internal recording capabilities have only been slightly expanded. This means that 240 FPS in HD and all common 4K frame rates are now also possible in C4K. However, there is still no internal 10 bit 4K recording over 30 fps. For 50/60p in (C)4K, internally 8 Bit 4:2:0 remains the upper limit. Of course, the GH5 can record unlimited without a 30 min limit, V-Log L is integrated in the GH5s at no extra charge. Display and viewfinder are the same (LCD touchscreen, 8 cm (3.2?), 3:2 format, 1.62 MP, freely rotatable, OLED viewfinder, 3.68 MP).

For multi-camera setups, the new timecode connection should be exciting: Due to the double assignment of the X-Sync port, it can now be used for BNC time code synchronization (In and Out). A BNC converter cable is included in the delivery.
Time Code In and Out is possible via a supplied BNC adapter cable
Despite identical case dimensions (138.5 x 98.1 x 87.4 mm), the weight of the GH5s has even decreased slightly (only about 660 grams instead of 725 g for the body with SD card and battery). The GH5s will be delivered from the end of February for around 2500 euros.
Distinctive and unique, clear distinguishing feature: The red trigger button of the GH5s
