The Lumix GH6 will soon get a new, interesting feature. The next firmware version will support recording to an external SSD connected via USB, which can simplify data logistics and speed up workflows, among other things. To the best of our knowledge, this functionality can only be found on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras and the Sigma fp.
With firmware 2.2, it will be possible to record high-quality Apple ProRes 422 HQ (maximum 1.9 Gbps) or high volume All-Intra 4:2:2 10-bit data from the GH6 directly to a USB drive (SSD) with a maximum capacity of 2 TB. Panasnonic does not (yet) provide recommendations for specific SSD models.
Apple ProRes RAW recording, on the other hand, still requires an Atomos Ninja V(+) HDMI recorder, which comes with a corresponding license.
The firmware version 2.2 is supposed to be available on September 27 at
here. It is not clear from the announcement whether it will also include other new features besides SSD recording.
