Thanks to a newly calculated optical design, the new LUMIX S 100mm with a weight of around 300 grams is currently the world's smallest and lightest macro lens with a fixed focal length in the medium telephoto range, according to Panasonic.
The linear motor, also newly developed for this purpose, is said to operate almost silently and offers the option of choosing between linear and non-linear focus ring settings. According to the press release, this should also indirectly minimize so-called "focus breathing", in which the angle of view changes due to movements in the focus position.

The focal length is (as the name suggests) 100mm with a macro 1:1 image, the closest focusing distance is an impressive 20.4 cm. To make use of this, there is a separate focus range switch on the lens (0.204-0.5m / 0.5m-∞ / FULL).

The lens is dust/splash-proof and was developed for use in temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius.
With its dimensions of 73.6 x 82.0 mm, it fits in perfectly with the other Panasonic L-mount primes already available with 18, 24, 35, 50 and 85 mm focal lengths, which have identical dimensions. Their weight is also consistently around 300 grams. This reduces the workload when changing lenses on a gimbal or drone, as the camera's center of gravity does not shift significantly after a change. The filter diameter of 67mm is also identical for all lenses in this series.
The aperture is F2.8 at maximum opening, the lens allows a minimum of F22. The circular aperture of the diaphragm consists of 9 blades.
The LUMIX S 100mm F2.8 MACRO (S-E100) is expected to be available in stores from the end of January 2024 with a recommended retail price of 1,099 euros.
