Panasonic LUMIX S5D - S5 in a new guise with OLED viewfinder and LiDAR option

With the LUMIX S5D, Panasonic is reviving the technology of the original, first S5 in a new version. This is particularly noteworthy as the now improved phase detection autofocus is not on board, but only the ‘classic’ contrast AF is used once again.
However, the revised S5D is said to be DJI LiDAR AF-capable: if you couple the S5D with the DJI LiDAR Range Finder module and the DJI RS 3 Pro gimbal, the range measurement data is The range finder data is sent to the camera via USB and the camera uses this to control the focus. Thanks to the LiDAR&s 43,200 high-speed measuring points at a distance of 14 metres, extremely fast autofocus should be possible, which should also be particularly effective when shooting in poor lighting conditions.

Otherwise, the LUMIX S5D has all the functions already familiar from the LUMIX S5, including a 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor, which offers the typically good V-Log dynamic range together with Dual Native ISO technology. The integrated Body I.S. (Image Stabiliser) should also ensure good camera shake correction. By combining the 5-axis Body I.S. in the camera and the O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabiliser, 2-axis) in LUMIX S series lenses, image stabilisation can be improved even further.
The LUMIX S5D can record 4K 60p/50p 4:2:0 10-bit and 4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit internally for up to 30 minutes. It is also able to output 4K 60p/50p 4:2:2 10-bit via HDMI. There is also no time limit for internal 4K 30p/25p 4:2:0 8-bit recording. The Slow & Quick mode enables slow-motion and time-lapse videos in 4K (1-60fps, 30x fast to 2.5x slow) or in FHD (1-180fps, 60x fast to 7.5x slow).
In addition to C4K video recording, the LUMIX S5D can output RAW video data via HDMI at a resolution of 5.9K (5888x3312) 29.97p/25p, 4.1K (4128x2176) 59.94p/50p and Anamorphic 3.5K (3536x2656)/50p to ATOMOS recorders such as the NINJA V. A variety of auxiliary functions for video recording, such as Vectorscope, Master Pedestal Adjustment and SS/Gain Operation (SEC/ISO, ANGLE/ISO, SEC/dB) are also available.
The LUMIX S5D comes in a die-cast magnesium housing and is splash-proof and dust-proof. It has a large LVF (Live View Finder) with a high magnification ratio of approx. 0.74x, which is based on an OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display with a resolution of 2,360K dots. By using OLED for the LVF, a fast response with a minimum delay of less than 0.005 seconds is achieved.
The 3.0-inch LCD with a 3:2 aspect ratio and 1,840K dots also enables touch control of the camera. The composition can be checked during recording in various popular aspect ratios such as 16:9, 4:3, 1:1, 4:5, 5:4 and 9:16 with the frame marker function. A REC frame indicator shows whether the camera is recording or not.
The LUMIX S5D has a dual SD memory card slot - one slot is UHS-I and the other is the fast, high-performance UHS-II (Video Class 90).
The camera&s battery can be charged either via AC or USB.
The S5D will be available in two kit versions from November. The kit with the LUMIX S Series 18-40mm F4.5-6.3 lens will cost 1,599 Euro Euros, while the kit with the 20-200mm F4-7.1 lens will be available for 2,099 Euros.
