One year ago, Panavision at the Cine Gear 2018 in LA presented its variable LCND (Liquid Crystal ND) for the first time - now it is ready for the market and will be presented in its final version at the Cine Gear 2019. The LCND is a Vario ND filter based on Liquid Crystal, whose ND filter values can be continuously adjusted by 6 f-stops.
The filter itself should cost at least a third of the aperture light and help to avoid the problems of traditional Vario-ND filters (such as unevenness, pattern formation, unwanted polarization filter effect and loss of sharpness), which use two combined polarization filters.

The LC display of the filter requires power, which is supplied by the battery built into the housing. Due to its lateral control unit, the Panavision LCND can only be used with Panavision&s special Matte Box.
The LCND can be adjusted manually directly by means of a steering wheel and two buttons or remotely controlled via a Preston MDR FIZ radio remote control. It will probably not be offered for sale by Panavision, but will only be available for rental.
