The Pearla iPhone camera app is advertised as a professional camera application, offering various video functions and features, including Log video recording. The manufacturer promises a unique image processing pipeline that directly addresses the iPhone's image sensors, enabling superior image and video quality with full user control.

With the latest update, the manufacturer may be overshooting the mark regarding the purpose of Log recording. The new Pearla Version 2.2 expands the recording options to include no fewer than seven (!!) new Log color spaces: Canon C-Log3, Blackmagic Design Film Gen 5, Arri LogC3, DJI D-Log, Fujifilm F-Log, Sony S-Log2, and Panasonic V-Log.
The actual purpose of Log color spaces is to preserve as much image information from the sensor as possible during recording and then convert it in post-production into a color space that is attractive(er) to the human eye. For this purpose, a camera strictly needs only one standardized LUT - as long as it can be correctly interpreted in the post-processing program.

The developer of Pearla argues that a multitude of potential Log color spaces allows iPhone recordings to be better utilized in multi-camera projects where professional video cameras or DSLMs are also used. We dare to doubt whether this is useful in practice, because different sensors with the same LUT are likely to produce different image signals. But who knows, maybe it works better than expected and is still a very useful feature for some users. The app also allows recording videos in Rec-709 format with dynamic tone mapping disabled.
Pearla Version 2.2 is available in the App Store and works with all iPhones that support iOS 17. The app can be downloaded for free and offers a short three-day trial version, with which you can easily try out whether you like the operation. To be able to use all the functions of the app afterwards, you need a subscription (3.99 euros/month, 9.99 euros/3 months, 29.99 euros/year).
