Philips Momentum 559M1RYV: 55

Philips has introduced the new Momentum 559M1RYV, a successor to the 55" monitor Philips 558M1RY announced about a year ago. The new version was developed especially for the new X-Box and surpasses the previous model in one category.

As with its predecessor, the technical specs are remarkable and qualify the Momentum 55 for video work in addition to gaming: the VA panel with 4K UltraHD resolution (3,840 x 2,160) and 10-bit color depth achieves a maximum brightness of up to 1,200 nits (with a standard brightness of 750 nits) and covers the professional DCI-P3 color space at 95%, the sRGB at 125% and the NTSC at 104%. These data secure the 559M1RYV a DisplayHDR 1000 certification and should allow for a very good display of HDR content.

However, the value of the highest brightness always refers to small areas of the screen, not the entire surface - a distinction is made in the specifications not only between the peak brightness of small areas and the entire screen surface, but also between short-term overall brightness and the highest brightness that can be maintained over longer periods without overheating the display - this is at least 600 nits for DisplayHDR-1000, for example.

The maximum refresh rate has been increased from 120 HZ to 144 Hz - dynamic frame rates can be reproduced via Adaptive Sync and VRR. Also new is the three

HDMI 2.1 port, which replace the HDMI 2.0b ports of the predecessor and only enable a high refresh rate of 120 Hz when displaying 4K in combination with the X-Box due to their maximum data rate. Also on board are a USB-C port (with DisplayPort Alternate Mode and 65W Power Delivery) as well as DisplayPort 1.4 and a USB 3.2 hub with 4 USB-A ports. Conveniently, a remote control for the monitor&s settings is included.

The integrated sound system of the Philips Momentum 558M1RY was realized in the form of a soundbar in cooperation with audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins. The Momentum 55 uses a 3-sided Ambiglow to adjust the color of its surroundings to the respective content. Unfortunately, its height cannot be adjusted due to its size, but it can be tilted by -5° to 10°.
