Problems with NAND Flash production: SSD prices will increase by 5-10%

According to Western Digital (WD, HGST and SanDisk), at least 6.5 exabytes (6.5 million terabytes) of 3D NAND flash memory already produced is unusable due to contamination at two production facilities in Japan jointly operated with Kioxia (formerly Toshiba). However, since the damage has not yet been fully accounted for by WDC and Kioxia, it could be even greater than previously estimated.

Kioxia is one of the world&s largest manufacturers of flash and SSD memory and a major supplier to Western Digital - the two companies& market share of total NAND flash production is about 33%, and the tainted memory accounts for about 3% of total annual global production.

The market analyst

Trendforce, which before the incident had assumed a slight overproduction and a resulting drop in prices, now expects prices for NAND flash to rise between 5% and 10% in the second quarter. Additionally weighing on NAND Flash production was a shutdown of Samsung plants in China caused by COVID. Trendforce estimates the total market of consume around enterprise SSDs last year was 207 exabytes in the form of 333 million SSDs sold.

Since the affected 3D NAND Falsh memory is mainly used in SSDs, a corresponding price increase is also to be expected in this area.
