RAW WARS: Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere - now with native Nikon RED RAW NE Support

No question, Nikon is currently on a good run with the Nikon ZR and the newly introduced RED RAW NE. This is evidenced, among other things, by the fact that relevant applications now natively support the new RAW format. Blackmagic was essentially on board from day one, but now Adobe Premiere and Apple's Final Cut Pro are also able to import RED RAW NE without transcoding.

In fact, the implementation effort was likely limited, as it primarily functions via an SDK developed by RED, which in its latest version includes support for Nikon's new RAW format. Therefore, anyone who previously supported RED RAW via the SDK would have already completed a large part of the work by updating to the new SDK.

A nice side effect opens an unexpected door: N-RAW files from other Nikon camera models can now also be opened in Final Cut Pro indirectly – albeit without directly supported Color Science. To open the files in Final Cut Pro, the corresponding NEF files simply need to be renamed to R3D files by changing their file extension.

The actual advantage of RED RAW support, however, lies in continuous support for the RED Color Pipeline – and this is, of course, only achieved when the camera's sensor is also aligned with the workflow. This is not the case with renamed NEF files from other Nikon cameras.

In any case, this adaptation demonstrates how serious Nikon has been about gaining ground in the cine sector since acquiring RED. Evidently, they not only place great importance on giving their mirrorless cameras a RED logo, but Nikon has also understood that functional color workflows are a crucial part of the professional cine business. And indeed, RED Color Science as a Unique Selling Proposition is currently selling even better than the greatest optimists at Nikon had hoped. At least, no camera has managed to capture user interest to such an extent in a long time as the Nikon ZR recently has.

To edit the new R3D NE files from the Nikon ZR in Final Cut Pro, you need to download and install the currently version 23 of the RED Apple Workflow Installer. For Premiere support (as well as for After Effects, Media Encoder, and Audition), you must install the current beta version via the Adobe Cloud.
