RED has released a new beta firmware (1.6.1) for its V-Raptor cameras - V-Raptor XL 8K VV, V-Raptor XL 8K S35 and V-Raptorr 8K VV - with many new features. The most spectacular new feature is probably the implementation of Face Detection Autofocus. ;)
With the adoption of the Canon RF mount in the RED Komodo (X) and Raptor 8K VV, an autofocus function entered the RED camera line-up for the first time. At  our test with the RED Komodo we could attest the "small" RED a solid first implementation of the AF function. See also our test clip with Caro (and Rolleiflex :-)): With the beta firmware now available for download for the Raptor series, RED goes a step further and now also introduces face recognition algorithms for AF operation. However, RED is not the first in the high-end cine sector. Canon had already equipped its flagship EOS C700 with Dual Pixel AF in 2016 - see also our practical test of the Canon EOS C700 incl. AF shots. And Sony has already presented an exciting autofocus implementation in the cine sector with the Burano also recently presented here. So the question remains whether ARRI will also move in the direction of AF in the future - we can&t really imagine AF in the current ARRI camera line-up, but who knows - maybe ARRI will like an Alexa Mini 35 at some point - AF could definitely be an option here in our eyes ...
