After RED was acquired by Nikon 14 months ago, many users are eagerly awaiting the first cameras to emerge from the collaboration between the two manufacturers. Nikon Rumors claims to have obtained initial information about the first Nikon camera with RED DNA.
The 6K sensor, similar to the Z6 III or the new Panasonic S1II, is said to be "partially stacked" and offer a dynamic range of 14.5 stops. Rumor has it that the model will be called "Nikon ZR" (R for RED) and will cost around ,500. The official announcement is expected in the third or fourth quarter of 2025. 6K REDCODE RAW should be possible with up to 60 fps, while N-RAW and ProRes will remain as recording options. The camera is also said to offer the typical photo capabilities of the other models in the Z series. In the simplest case, we can expect a slightly modified Nikon Z camera that additionally receives the Nikon RED codec and forgoes the viewfinder. In the best case, the housing will be noticeably adapted to the needs of filmmakers, for example with numerous mount holes and XLR connections. It seems that a coming Nikon ZR will compete with a rumored Panasonic camera in a special filmmaker housing. Both cameras aim to take market share away from the FX3 and its successor. So there will probably be some camera news this year, but they are all based on a relatively similar hardware basis: 6K RAW full-frame sensor up to 60p. The big differences between the cameras will therefore be mainly in the operating philosophy and the lens selection. Bild zur Newsmeldung:
