Runway had just released the latest (and best) Version 3 Alpha of its video AI about a week ago, allowing videos to be generated not only by text prompt but also from a starting image using image-to-video. Now Runway has unlocked another interesting feature: from now on, the image uploaded by the user can also be the last frame of a video, meaning the video AI generates a 5 or 10-second animation that ends in the specified image, optionally also by text prompt with a description of how the transition is roughly desired. Lumas Dream Machine had received the end-frame function at the end of July. Dream Machine also offers the ability to define both a starting and an ending image for video generation, which gives even more control over the generated video. The Chinese Video AI Kling, which has just been made internationally accessible, also has the ability to specify start and end frames for a video. Unfortunately, this feature is still missing in Runway Gen 3; currently, start and end frame animations can only be connected in two steps, but it is probably only a matter of time before Runway also enables the definition of start and end images.
