Along with the Sigma 200mm F2 DG OS Sports telephoto lens (full-frame telephoto), Sigma has also announced an ultra-wide-angle lens for APS-C, which could be of interest to Super35 filmmakers. The Sigma 12mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary is said to be the brightest lens with a 12mm focal length currently available (equivalent to 18mm in 35mm full-frame). With its F1.4 aperture and compact design, it is recommended for nocturnal street photography, travel and outdoor shoots, astrophotography and gimbal shots, among other things.
The optical design comprises 14 elements in 12 groups, including three double-sided aspherical lenses and two SLD glass elements, the arrangement of which is designed to ensure high optical performance even at open aperture F1.4. According to the manufacturer, sagittal coma is also effectively corrected in order to guarantee clear and sharp images from edge to edge, for example for shots of the starry sky.
The use of double-sided aspherical elements also contributes to the compact and lightweight construction - the lens with a total length of only 69.4 mm weighs 225 g, despite the ultra-wide angle and high speed.
The focus is driven by a precisely controlled stepping motor. According to Sigma, the lens offers excellent tracking performance with moving subjects and thus enables high-quality video productions. The close focusing distance is 17.2 cm.
The new ultra-wide-angle lens will be released for Sony E-Mount, Fujifilm X Mount and Canon RF-Mount and complements Sigma's line-up of F1.4 prime lenses for mirrorless APS-C cameras - in addition to the new 12mm, this also includes a 16mm, 23mm, 30mm and a 56mm.
The Sigma 12mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary will be available from September 4, 2025 for 599 euros.
