SK Hynix starts mass production of HBM2E storage

SK Hynix Inc. announced today that it has begun mass production of the high-speed "HBM2E" storage device. This is remarkable because HBM memory is the fastest memory available for GPUs. The speed of HBM memory is crucial for the acceleration of GPU video effects at high resolutions.

Compared to the last generation (HBM2), the speed has doubled again and is now around 460GB/s per chip with 1024 data lines. On cards typically used in the video sector, 4 chips are usually connected in parallel with 4096 data lines, which will then enable data rates of almost 2 TB/s. The currently fastest HBM cards such as the AMD Radeon VII (and its offshoots) only manage half that.

However, this speed also has its price, which is why HBM memory is increasingly rare on consumer GPUs, where the much cheaper and slower GDDR6 is used. Nevertheless, at least in the workstation area, there will certainly be graphics cards with the new HBM2E memory, which should provide a strong speed boost for Resolve and its partners.

Since a single HBM2E chip can hold up to 16 GB of memory, we will probably see graphics cards with 64 GB of memory before the end of this year.
