Samsung has introduced the PRO Plus and EVO Plus, two new SXC memory card series designed specifically for content creators, photographers and filmmakers using DSLR, mirrorless or compact cameras or camcorders. The new SD cards, whose names are inspired by Samsung's well-known SSD series of the same name, are available in the memory sizes 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB.
Both series meet UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) specifications and enable high-resolution video recording of 4K UltraHD video (except for the 32GB and 64GB EVO Plus models). For example, the 256 GB versions store up to six hours of 4K UHD video (30 fps) or 28 hours of Full HD video (30fps) or 54,300 photos in 4K resolution (at an average size of 4.5 MB). Samsung promises protection for both models against water, extreme temperatures, X-rays, wear and tear, magnets and shocks as well as falls from a height of up to five meters.
The PRO Plus SDXC memory cards are aimed primarily at professional users, with sequential read speeds of up to 100 MB/s and write speeds of up to 90 MB/s.
The new Samsung PRO Plus and EVO Plus SDXC memory cards
The EVO Plus models are slightly cheaper than the PRO version and offer transfer speeds of up to 100 MB/s for fast copying of the images to the computer. However, Samsung does not specify the writing speed of the EVO Plus - unlike the PRO model - but according to Class 10 U3 specifications, the 128GB and 25GB models should be at least 30 MB/s (the 32GB and 64GB models only have a Class 10 U1 specification, i.e. they only write at least 10 MB/s).
PRO Plus and EVO Plus are available from the end of October at the following recommended retail prices (RRP). PRO Plus costs €9.49 for the 32GB version, €13.19 for the 64GB version, €23.99 for 128GB and €52.79 for 256GB. The EVO Plus costs 7.99 € (32 GB), 10.99 € (64 GB), 19.99 € (128 GB) and 43.99 € (256 GB).
