Samsung Portable SSD T5 Evo - affordable 8TB and price increases on the horizon

[08:57 Wed,8.November 2023   by Rudi Schmidts]

Even though SSD prices are currently at rock bottom, this is not stopping Samsung from enriching the market with new designs. The Portable T9 has only just been introduced as a high-performance external SSD, and the next exciting model, which should (and will) appeal to a different target group, is already attracting attention.

The upcoming Portable SSD T5 Evo, with its maximum possible 460 MB/s, is significantly slower than the T9, whose interface is capable of up to 2 TB/s. In return, it will offer much more memory at relatively low prices. In contrast to the already available Portable SSD T5 (without EVO), the new Portable SSD T5 EVO will be available with up to 8TB of storage, making it particularly interesting as data storage for video editing.

In a simple plastic housing (95 × 40 × 17 millimetres) with a weight of around 100 grams, the EVO weighs around twice as much as its aluminum predecessor. It is connected via a USB-C connection, an additional power connection is not necessary.

Internally, the SSD most likely works with the relatively slow SATA technology via USB 3.2 Gen1 with 5 Gbit/s, which is indicated by the maximum data transfer rate of 460 MB/s. It can also be strongly assumed that Samsung will not use very fast memory or fast controllers for such capacities at this price, which is why the real data rates will be significantly lower.

So far there are hardly any cheap SSDs with 8TB and official euro prices are still pending, but US prices have already appeared on the net and these usually give a good impression of where the new SSD will be priced. The 2TB model is expected to cost around 190 US dollars, the 4TB model 350 US dollars and the 8TB model 660 dollars.

Speaking of costs. Several industry analysts claim to have heard that Samsung intends to implement significant price increases for SSDs and all flash memories in the coming months. Price increases of 10 to 20 percent are planned for the fourth quarter of 2023. In the first quarter of 2024 and also in the second quarter of 2024, Samsung is reportedly planning to increase prices for NAND flash memory by a further 20 percent in each case - which would mean that it intends to implement at least 50 percent higher prices compared to the current price level by mid-2024.

At German online retailers, SDD prices still seem to be stagnating at an extremely low level and it is never certain whether Samsung will ultimately succeed in implementing such plans/prices. After all, the other manufacturers also have to follow suit, which can of course quickly become problematic under anti-trust law.

However, as the prices do not seem to have much more room to fall, now is perhaps a good time to stock up on some fresh memory if you need it.
