Samyang is surfing the retro wave with a curious lens concept - Remaster Slim is the name of the new, modular optics, in which the heart, namely the lens construction, can be exchanged. The optical modules with different focal lengths - 21mm f/2.8, 28mm f/3.5, 32mm f/3.5 - are inserted into the lens barrel, which is just under 2cm short, and attached to it using a magnetic mechanism.

An autofocus with stepper motor is integrated in the lens housing, which works with the small interchangeable modules. However, they can also be focused manually, a corresponding ring is available, albeit narrow. The lens modules are said to be based on old 35 mm cameras, but according to Samyang they have been adapted to the requirements of digital sensors. The image is said to be analog-like soft and rather warm; apparently there is actually
a little hype to screw real old (and bad) disposable lenses in front of DSLMs using a tinkering solution in order to achieve a special look.
The “Remaster Slim” housing weighs approx. 58 grams, plus the respective lens module with a weight of between 8.4 and 12.6 grams, so a complete lens of this type only weighs around 70 grams. The optical constructions of the modules comprise 6 or 7 elements in 6 groups, the aperture consists of 7 blades.
Unfortunately, only Sony E-mount cameras are supported, even in full-frame mode, and Samyang is only launching the Remaster Slim optics in Korea for the time being, with a price of around 200 euros for one focal length. Whether they will also be available internationally in the medium term remains to be seen.
