The hard drive specialist Seagate announced at the recent investor meeting that new HDDs with 40 TB capacity are already being delivered in limited quantities. The new drives are based on Seagate&s HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording) technology, in which areas to be written are briefly heated to a temperature of 450 degrees using a laser in order to reduce the field strength at this point and precisely write a bit. ;)

While the HAMR-based Mozaic 3+ technology in the Exos M 32 still allowed a data density of 3+ TB per disk (platter), this has now grown to 4 TB/disk thanks to Mozaic 4+ and is then expected to be increased to 5 TB per Mozaic 5+, which would correspond to a capacity of 50 TB if 10 disks per hard drive continue to be used. ;) Seagate&s HAMR Technology However, Seagate&s new 40 TB hard drives are not yet available for normal end customers. If the tests by the selected major customers with the models now being delivered are successful, mass production is scheduled to start in the first half of next year. 44 TB models are planned for 2027, followed by the 50 TB hard drives for 2028. The fact that the 50 TB model is coming so late - it was announced earlier for next year - underlines the www.slashcam.de/news/single/Seagate-Exos-M-32-TB--Neue-HAMR-Technologie-ermoegl-19013.html difficulties of HAMR technology, which has already caused many delays. For example, Seagate originally expected to produce 60 TB HAMR hard drives by 2022, but then missed these (and other) targets several times. ;) Seagate&s HAMR Technology Even in 2022, Seagate promised 40+ TB hard drives two years later - but it is only since last year that HAMR hard drives have actually been able to be produced in large quantities, albeit initially with "only" 32 TB.
