Sharp seems to be serious about entering the 8K camera business under ,000. At CES 2019, this step was already announced at
with a prototype. This was followed by the announcement that
Sharp has joined the MicroFourThirds consortium. In addition to Olympus and Panasonic, there are already Blackmagic and other MFT camera manufacturers. Sharp also announces the following on its own pages about NAB itself:
"At the NAB Show booth, Sharp will exhibit a small-type 8K video camera... ".
The entry into the 8K prosumer segment could therefore be imminent.
The first price rumours for the "Sharp 8K" are now no longer "under 5,000 dollars", but somewhat more precisely between 2,800 and 3,700 dollars. Whether an MFT camera with small 8K-sensors can be a success for this price is likely to depend primarily on the internals of the firmware. There have been rumours that Red could have his fingers in the pie with this camera.
An 8K-MFT is unlikely to affect the previous Red market. Potential Pocket Cinema Camera 4K users, on the other hand, could possibly be addressed with the Sharp model. But for that you would also have to noticeably find Red Mojo in the camera. If, on the other hand, there is "only" a strongly compressed h.265 home cooking with consumer menu navigation, the whole thing should almost certainly end up as a stillbirth. Anyway, we are curious how realistic Sharp's chances are to become a bigger player in the upcoming 8K camera market. A "Worlds First 8K consumer camera" alone should probably not be enough...
